Weed/plant identification and removal advice

We have some sort of weed/plant in our garden.. wondering what it is

We bought the house a year ago and have started to sort out the back garden.

Unfortunately there is a plant which sprouts at various spots around the garden and has roots which appear to spread across the entire garden.

Its tough getting up a single sprouting plant let alone the whole thing!

Any advice on what it is or how to deal with it would be much appreciated.

There's a hint of hazel about that.

It looks to me as if you've got more than one sort of plant there.  If you wait a few days until the leaves unfurl, we might be able to identify them better...  I'd go for sycamore for no. 3 at the moment, but it might look completely different with leaves!  Anyway, if you're sure you don't want whatever they are, you could try a brushwood killer like SBK, but I think you'd have to wait until the leaves are fully open for maximum effectiveness (though I could be wrong about that - haven't used it myself).  If you're digging shrubs out I recommend a mattock.  About a tenner from B&Q and much more effective than a spade.  image

I think the top one might be  wild cherry suckers.

As above, wait for leaves to appear. A candidate is dogwood, invasive and common.

  • Thanks very much... I will return with photos of the leaves in a few days.

I now have 10 times the knowledge I had before this post.

    Thanks again

Timely advice, Verdun.  image  Most of us have sprayed something with weedkiller that we shouldn't have...  image

If you accidentally spray a wanted plant with weedkiller, water the plant immediately, it may be fine.

True, LeifUK, but sometimes you don't realise you've sprayed it until it looks sick.
