Strange weed in my lawn
This strange weed has appeared all over my lawn recently. Does anybody know what it is? It has one stem about 5-6" high, no leaves but several nodes and a 'catkin' on the top which appears to disperse clouds of pollen when knocked. I am wondering if I mow it down will it reproduce even more?

No not at all. It has nothing growing out of the sides, only a catkin on the top.
One of the sedges maybe

Sounds awfully like Horsetail to me. Is it this?

I don't think so, it's not even green. but thanks anyway.
Yes thanks Bob. That's it. I've never seen it before. Will find out how to control it.
The first picture on that page (on the left) shows the pollen-bearing 'flower' It's brown and that's all you see at this stage. Can't think of much else to be honest.
It's yellowish brown. There's a good photo of it in the link Bob posted.
Plantain?
It's been identified - it's horsetail - Equisetum arvense.

What a pain
. Hope you have better luck than me. It comes up between the block paving and anywhere it feels at home, eg very poor soil and between anything that's hard to get to.
