nipped off primrose's

granmagranma Posts: 1,933

Walked round our garden this morning, admiring my assortment of coloured primroses to collect a large gainfully of nipped off flowers, no stem  just the whole full flower. The petals are not damaged , pulled off etc

Reluctant to waste them I shall press everyone for craft work , at least grandkids will enjoy them .

But I'm puzzled , is it the birds? Mice ?

I'd much rather see them in the garden , is it happening to anyone else? And what can I do ? Any ideas ?

A very fine specimen of a pheasant was recently seen strutting around the border pulling all the heads off my crocus. A yell of 'game chips and bread sauce' saw him off - but not before the damage was done. I believe primrose flowers are edible for humans - so, presumably, they taste good to other creatures too.

Pheasant's not in season now Granma - you'll have to concentrate on fattening him up over the summer - otherwise it's a sentence of 6 months at Her Majesty's pleasure and/or  a fine of up to £5,000.

When October comes around try offering him some raisins soaked in brandy - a few of those and he'll be too drunk to fly away (old poacher's trick image).

Not the pheasant in our garden, but someone is taking the tops off daffs, and tulips - suspect the idiot pigeon but not seen it happening, only the results.  The blue tits adore purple primroses and eat the petals with great gusto here.

Mice or voles will take tops of daffs and tulips.

Sparrows were always blamed for this years ago. Have you got sparrows.

I have no sparrows are my primroses are intact. I know that proves nothingimage

OK, suspect probably small, grey and furry then, as far as the tulips and daffs are concerned.  Plenty sparrows, for which we are grateful, but I've watched the blue tits eating the purple petals - maybe they both do!

Rabbits ate all the flowers off my display of blue and yellow bedding primroses - I only had it for 2 days. They nibbled the centres out, right down to the buds. They are now covered with upturned wire baskets - not really the look I was going for! However, the plants did produce new buds and are flowering again now. (I know it was a rabbit because I trapped the little beast!image)
