  • Hi David, My sweet peas have sprouted! Its 10c in the garage .I moved them under grow lights, how long should I keep them inside ,they have no leaves yet. It is cold here and would like to know what temp it should be to put them in a cold frame. thanks   Debra

  • Hi, Debs.....it's rather important not to subject them to too much artificial heat & light at this stage and I would suggest you put them into your coldframe now.

You say 'It is cold here', what kind of night time temps are we talking?

  • Hi David The temps at night are approx -1 and daytime approx 5  Thanks Deb

    Hi David,

I have always sown two seeds to a cell (like you have in your photos) - if they both germinate should I  pull one out, or are they ok to grow as a pair that close ?  I use old loo rolls and plant the whole thing out in the garden come April/May.

    Thanks

  • Hi, Chicky.....I plant the whole rootball complete with the two plants. That's for just for cut flowers, if they were for showing, that would be a different matter.

David i noticed you said to plant them out in a few weeks time. What sort of date do you normally put them out I live in the north east and was thinking end of april.

  • Good question, cairnsie.

First of all we must remember that they are very hardy, so cold weather isn't going to bother them if they have been raised in a clodframe or similar. But of course it would be sensible to let them get established before the onset of any cold-snap......so choose an open spell of weather.

I will mention here, that although I've never lost SPs through frost, I have in cold biting winds....and as it happens, that's just what we're getting locally at the mo.

So I would suggest keeping an eye on the weather.
