  • Wasn't around much yesterday, OL.... hence my late response. Just wanted to say what a beautiful sample of sweet peas you posted and I'm pleased you've noticed the difference with quality seed.

I would readily agree about the decrease in scent with the newer varieties,  this applies to many species of flowers that have been developed for other aspects. Fortunately there are still lots of SPs to choose from that still have lots of scent.

  • Hello all.

Is it too soon to sow next year's sweet peas? I want to try an early batch this year.

    Thanks.

  • Yes, ommthree. Give it about another month.....otherwise they'll go into the winter too advanced.

  • Thanks David!

  • You read my mind ommthree, I was going to ask that because either new GW mag came today with the free seeds saying to sow.......what I always forget is that it's next months mag!!!  Thanks David for clarifying image

  • ....I would add, that it's always advisable to keep an eye on the prevailing weather. We may have an nippy autumn or still be in this very mild spell. Ideal sowing temps would be around 10/15C, once the seed has germinated it can then be as cold as it likes.

No soaking, no chipping, no propagators and definitely NO CODDLING!

  • No coddling David.....promise image

    Hi Folks,

Ive been growing sweet peas for three years with mixed results.  I want to get quality seed for next year and start them in the Autumn.  I like most colours (except bright red)  I want them to look good but they must smell georgeous.  I could use the freebies in the mag but if there is something better out there then I would like to buy it.  Can you advise me on a good supplier and varieties that would fit the bill.  Im keen to make sure I dont repeat mistakes so that I get a really good show next year (weather permitting)

  • Hi, Yviestevie, you pays your money takes your choice of course, but your on the right track by understanding that quality seed = quality flowers.

To meet your requirements, I would suggest the 'Chelsea Seed Collection' by Eagle Sweet Peas. http://www.eaglesweetpeas.co.uk/gallery.php?g=4

There are other specialists out there such as Matthewmans, but my own preference is for Eagle SPs for consistent quality & service.

Thanks for the recommendation David.  Ive ordered a packet of seeds.  They provide some good cultivation information too, so fingers crossed I'll have more success this year.
