Growing onions with Simon

  • Thanks Simon it's a shame that the weather has been so bad and affected your crop the way that it has, I planted loads of onion sets both last autumn senshu and again in spring sturon and stuttgart giant as well as garlic planted last November and again this February. I have to say that the garlic which I harvested in June wasn't great I had perhaps 4 smallish bulbs from the solent wights and 6 or so single bulbs which didn't split into cloves from some garlic bought from the supermarket. The senshu onions apart from 3 or 4 small bulbs which were healthy the rest being affected with white rot which had to be thrown away. The sturon and stuttgart over 50% were affected by white rot the rest were of reasonable quality and have all dried out well and are now in storage. I have come to the conclusion that my ground is too heavy and water retentive to grow overwintering onions or garlic. I have decided not to grow spring sown onions from sets next year and I have bought seed which I will sow in pots to be planted out next spring. I may try to find some cheap containers to grow onions and garlic in rather that planting directly into the ground as your container grown onions looked great. Anyway Simon keep up the good work and I have to report that my greenhouse grown tomatoes harbinger and Alicante have been brilliant this year as the cooler conditions have meant that they have had much softer skins and are sweeter to eat, I guess that the weather suits some crops in cooler years than it suits others swings and roundabouts you might say. cheers barry.

  • Hi Barry, great to hear your update. You have had much more of an issue with rot on the onions than I have. Mine was just more a size issue! I was very pleased with the kelsae onions grown from seed and planted in the large pot, I will be using that method again next year. My greenhouse tomatoes have been very good this year, like yours. Good to share the update. Cheers, Simon.
  • Here is a link to my last video about growing onions. It covers preparation for and storage of onions and garlic. I hope you enjoy it.

These are the Kelsae onions that I grew in a large pot, as shown in my you tube video series.  See them in part 5 and 6. I made some lovely French onion soup at the weekend With one of them!

Here is a link to the playlist for all the series about growing these and Sturon onions from seeds and sets respectively.
