Bought 2 geranium, 1 agapanthus,2 phlox,3 iris and 40 bulbs from Aldi today, geraniums and phlox were splitable, spent £4.95 ended up with 6 geraniums and 4 phlox after splitting them. What amazed me was the quality of the root systems on all of them much better than the bare root stuff I've had from other suppliers.
Wish I could have found phlox, hunted through all five trays of packets but no phlox. Yes, Dave, my hostas also had very good root systems. Lucky you to be able to split your plants. I always see if I can split plug plants when I buy them. Sometimes get 20 or so extra that way, and they do fine.
I bought 3 clematis at Morrisons this morning £1.79 each. The leaves all look slightly different and all are labelled as summer flowering. They look quite soft and I guess they have been greenhouse grown so I am going to give them some protection over the next few weels before I plant them out. Fingers crossed they will survive
Ali B2, plugs can go in the GH now. Wasn't aware Aldi were doing plugs, buying plugs from shops on the high st is a bit fraught, unless you get them as soon as they come in, the failure rate is quite high.
Next door neighbour was talking about aldi plants to me yesterday. 24 petunias or 15 geraniums plugs for £1.49 I think she said, Very cheap but to early for petunia plants in my opinion, you got to find somewhere for them to live until mid/late May. I thought the little greenhouse tray was impressive though.
old saying. You get what you pay for. In spite of the saying, I have had some great stuff from Aldi, Lidl wilkos Poundland Morrisons etc. Rule of thumb, only buy if you can see life in the plant. Dhalia's are usually OK if the tubers are healthy & not shrivelled in the bag & so are some of the bigger bulbs. i never seem to do well small ones like Rannulculi Anenome. Roses can do ok so can some of the cane plants. For the price you pay for some of these you can't really complain. Don't just go out & plant them straight away. February is way to early for plugs. They need be kept in a greenhouse til about mid May. Planting can be hit or miss but if you follow the instructions& with the proper care you'll do ok. If you lose a rose or whatever a £1 isn't a lot is it? Happy growing all.

Wow, £1.79 for little diddy clematis liners at Morrisons, what a rip-off !!
Real nurseries would not sell clematis plants to the gardening public in this form.

was able to pick up geranium plugs and aster from aldi yesterday
had good success last year lost one or two but not bad
Richard - they are not little diddy plants, they are about 30cm tall. I thought less than £2 a plant was OK.
