Liam, start hardening them off - in last year's long cold spring we had self-sown Russian Giants peeking up through the melting snow!!!

Last week I sowed some outside directly into the bed where they are to grow. image

  • Hi I am a complete new starter at growing anything but wanted to teach my daughter life cycles of plants and where food comes from etc, so we are starting with sunflowers for our plants as I'm told they are easy to grow. We have planted as above only how will I know or at what frequency should I be watering them ?

    Many thanks

I grew sunflowers last year for the very first time.

I started off at one seed per small plastic desert pot. I thought I may only have partial success so I planted over 20.

Well!!! They all grew magnificently, and I had to keep repotting them in larger pots(I don't have a garden) Some plants got to ten foot tall, and I ended up giving loads to my neighbours, our front doorsteps down our road was awash with sunflowers, and looked spectacular.

Going to grow some more this year, but not so many this time.
  • I've been growing them for many years. They're great for pollinating insects as well as birds and squirrels.

  • Excuse my ignorance but this is the first time I've grown sunflower from seed in many many years! What does the term 'hardening them off' mean? It sounds like it involves taking them out every day & then back in if cold. I have very limited mobility so would you suggest planting them directly into garden or starting them off in small pots then transplanting them outside when a certain height? My son is looking forward to it all! He has succefully grown the 2 seeds that he planted & they have reached 2 foot so far in one pot. I do have a mini greenhouse if that is an option? Thanks for any help offered!

As my Sunflowers grow taller they've taken a bit of a battering from the wind. I was advised to mound up and firm the soil around the stems to help keep them upright. It works well and has not caused any rot.
  • Hello, what is the best time to plant seeds for sunflowers in a greenhouse in the New Hampshire area? Thanks for your help! David

  • Hello David - I'm afraid that most of us are UK based - you'll probably do better asking the members of your local gardening club who will know the conditions in your area.

    Good luck image

  • Hi all I'd love to grow some sunflowers in my garden. Can I put seeds straight into the ground or should I start them off in a tray? When's the best time to plant the seeds, am I too late?

Its very mild, but there is no point starting seeds off yet. Around March, seed sowing  of annuals starts in  England.
