Thanks for the feedback. I am going to have a look at the roots tomorrow. A few feet away i have planted a honeysuckle dropmore scarlet. This was planted in July and until i pruned it last week it was still in flower.
Today I had a look at the roots of the armandii, there has been no growth at all, in fact the rootball was still in the shape of the pot it came out of when bought from the garden centre last Autumn. Bad stock perhaps? The pot was about 12-15 cm wide and about 20-25cm deep. I have a plug for a clematis wisley cream so when that's up to size i'll replace the armandii with that.

You should have "teased" out the root ball, it may have been pot bound - do this with all pot grown plants. You may break a few roots, but that's OK.
