Clematis wilt is not so common as people think. It attacks mainly the large blousy Group 2 clematis which flower on last years wood.
The clematis armandii is a beautiful Chinese species which is a thug once established, but there are many more failures than successes when growing this plant.
Dig it up and plant a ' proper ' clematis, Group 3 viticella, texensis, or viorna hybrid on your South facing wall.
As we are on subject, can anyone recomend a nice clematis to grow through a plum tree ??. Was thinking a group 3 ?
How big is the plum tree John? A lot of the Group 3s aren't terribly big, 'cos you cut them down every year - C tangutica Bill Mackenzie is often grown into trees and gets taller than most Group 3s.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

I agree not C wilt.
It sounds as though it never got going, maybe not a great specimen to start with?
How big was it Lee, what size was the pot?
Id dig it up and look at the root, if that's not grown at all then nothing is going to happen now

Its a 5 year old about 9` on semi dwarfing rootstock, so wont grow much bigger.
Any of the viticellas will look good there, what is your colour preference ?
I have 112 different viticella.

and consider carefully before buying Bill MacKenzie. That's very nearly as big as armandii.
But splendid if you have a big enough host. I have a big shapeless conifer which is covered in yellow flowers and fluffy seeds for months
