Curious bulbous thing

Does anyone know what this is? Probably I planted it but I don't recall anything except Primulas in the vicinity...(it's in a bogish area)...

The label is just there for size...and the white root doesn't belong to it (great willowherb, I believe)

Looks like an onion or a shallot to me. Does it smell of anything?

  • Hi Nutimage

No it doesn't smell. It couldn't be a primula could it? The only reason I think that is I just snapped one of the shell bits and there was a yellowish powder inside which seems to be on some of my other prims. image

Definitely not a primula, not bulbs and that is a bulb. Looks as though it hasn't been planted yet, couldn't be a dropped daffodil could it?

Looks like a Lily to me. Seems scaly

That said, my Drumstick Primulas look like that at the moment.

Im edging on the side of Primula, if you zoom in you can see the primrose shaped leaf from last year.

  • What's the large onion-like bulb to the right?  It could be a set from that - many alliums produce small bulbs at the top father flowering instead of seeds.  When the stem falls, they take root.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Hi Guys - sorry for the delay...

All the 'bulb' part is on top of the soil although I cleared a bit away around it to see the whole thing. It's firmly wedged into the ground.

I have candelabra prims in the area but they look distinctly different. I don't remember planting one that looked like that - do your drumsticks appear to have segments Mattbeer? Do they always look like that?

The bulb to the right is a stone egg BtheG - bit of a red herring - sorryimage

I have planted some out in the garden but still had some left in pots, as you can see the new leaves emerge from that bulb shaped thing.

  • This is what it looks like from the top - I can see it in more detail on the photo than in real life and it does have a primula look to the centre don't you think?

Weird little beastie - I've half buried it just in case it's a rooted bulb...image
