This is a picture of Star of India in the garden here, a superb old cultivar, almost 150 years old.
She is, however, rather prone to powdery mildew, which is not a killer but is unsightly, for that reason it is best planted deep and given plenty of water during the growing season.
If the roots dry out and the plant is stressed that is when powdery mildew kicks in.
It's plAnted with its roots under my purgola so they should be cool and moist. I hope I can keep it ok. Should I just leave where they are and mulch and cut back to the first healthy bud?

It doesn't go away.
No. It's only a 10 minute job to replant, but entirely your shout.
By the way, there is no pruning group 4.
Do you know what variety it is, red dahlia?
hmm, I planted a clematis this afternoon. Too shallow I feel. I shall be lifting mine tomorrow and putting it deeper.
Never stop learning when it comes to gardening...
Star of india is group three, prune hard to a couple of buds.
