I ran out of pots big enough with mine. So a couple are sticking up out of the compost. They are in the greenhouse at the minute. It's not done them any harm. If they are going straight out. Make sure they are fully covered.

  • thankyou gb - I will shove it in soil and see what occurs !image

I have 3 round the edge of a 2 litre pot, they are forming decent leaves now. In greenhouse.

  • Hi, I bought some roots and had no idea which way to plant them so I just lay them on their side and covered them with a couple of inches of compost...awaiting results!

  • I had the same from Aldi! One end is a twig, the other is white footy looking buts.. But could be blanched leaves?! Have started them in pots before planting out, not convinced they're in the right way!!
  • I have the same problem! From Aldi, 4 plants. White shoots coming out, can't identify if roots or shoots! The other end is just twig... Is the white root? Or blanched leaves?! Have put them in a pot before planting out.
  • hi, I had  the one from aldi last year and asked same question- I was told to plant it as shoots will always find there way up - I did and it worked and got lots of gyp!image

2-3yrs I will have to keep an eye on the one I have bought. I wonder what type my gran used to have as her was 10yrs+ and still going strong when she moved house

    Nothing like a straight answer(!)

-So Shazy says bulb when she means rhizome. So what? I think most gardeners know what she's on about.

I planted mine vertically with the embryonic white bit at the top. Nice to see such a raft of replies but none directly answer the simple question: which way up, please???
