If it were mine I'd either leave it alone as a buddleia tree or remove it altogether and get another oneimage

  •  Probably controversial but how do you actually kill them off? My parents have one in their garden that is in the way - their soil is clay based so digging it out doesn't really appeal!

Even though its in clay soil not necessarily hard work it depends on how well its rooted, size etc or maybe I just got used to working on clay soil image

You could try cutting it down and put black bin liner over it to kill off but it won't happen quickly. Or you could try a glysophate but may need repeated applications if you see new growth (wouldn't be my choice)....Bound to be plenty of other ways but as I like them I have never thought of ways to kill them off

or maybe they could just work around it and leave it be and enjoyimage

  • You kill a B by cutting below its lowest growing point. However you still have dig it out!!

You could happily cut these down to about 1', they'll shoot again. You really can't damage these plants by cutting them back, they are seriously tough.  If you want to kill one, cut it down to about 1', auger a few holes in it and pour in neat SBK. Then you cover the holes, cling film over the whole stump is enough. Then it dies, however it does take a long time to rot away as do all stumps. Once it's dead you could bore out the central bit of the stump put some compost in it and plant Surfinia or somesuch in it.image Then you can tell everyone that it's a "feature".image
