hmmmm, they look similar fidgetbones, but ours really is like a big bushy tree, its over twice my height, with proper bark and big trunks. Photo over the weekend.....
If it's a Davidii,( conical flower heads that are smaller at the end) you can safely cut it down in February, to about 6". This will produce many shoots that will flower in mid Summer. They will be between 4' to 6' high . You can't hurt this shrub It depends on how high you want the shrub to be. I suggest your tree surgeon takes a look at railway embankments. Some of those plants are really impressive!!
ok, not sure if thats worked. but if you can see it, our B tree is to the left of the gravel path onto the grass and for an idea of scale, the bamboo hedge on the right is up to my shoulder (i'm 5'7). The second one is just behind it with the white stone at its foot, so a little smaller, but the same sort of overgrown look?
Hi, having now seen what you are up against these trees probably need to be pollarded. We are no longer talking about pruning a standard Buddleia bush, as per most of the advice you have received on here so far. I have never pollarded anything and others are probably more able to help. However it basically means shortening everything down to where they sprout from the main trunk.

I know of one growing in pure chalk , up a chalk cliff about 100 ft. above the ground.
That's okay, Sandy
I just wanted to illustrate the fact they are as tough as old boots & don't need any special care.

Any advice gratefully received
ok...still not quite right... lets hope I'm better at pruning than I am at uploading photos?

Ok Wonderboy, thank you so much. That sounds pretty drastic. I'll await some further input before firing up the chainsaw!!
