  • I made a pink border, totally gone off it now, have given most of it away! I suppose thats one of the drawbacks with a colour scheme image

I def (sorry couldnt spell the whole word!) think your tastes change as the years pass, i used to hate purple foliage, love it now, still not keen on yellow foliage, but who knows!

I quite like orange too verdun, but more of a rosa lady emma hamilton (hope i hot that right) rather than a bright orange image

Which months are you struggling to get flowers for Vic? image

Love burgundy with pink but for some reason I don't like bright red flowers, in fact when I think about it I also prefer gold to bright yellow.

I love using white Verdun I especially like it towards the back of the garden, when it gets dusk it looks lovely.

Im taking a bit of a risk and planting Madame Lemoine Lilac with the hydrangea limelight to extend the season.  It should be alright, it's not in the shade all the time and when it grows a bit taller it's head will be in the sun most of the day.  I've paid a bit extra and bought a bigger specimen so I hope it's a success.

  • Hi, the "best" gardener ever, Christopher Lloyd, now sadly dead, shocked everyone with his clashing colours, lots of very vibrant colours, and ignoring muddy pinks, lilacs etc. Try orange with deep mauve.

Foliage forms are important too, to show off the flowers.Think leaves as much as colour.

Rhythm is also important. Repeat your dominant colours along your borders every so often. If you only have a small space keep it simple.

    Experiment. Nothing is for ever.

I'm trying to get a blue and white border going -mainly to hide/distract from a very long horrible yellow hedge behind it. So far have tried lovely blue delphiniums, white lupins and foxgloves, penstemon white bedder and catmint which grows well but is on the purple side. I also have some blue -ish veronica? spires, blue alliums and odds and sods but pure blue flowers seem hard to find.

Any ideas anyone?  Clay soil, west facing, slightly shady (tall trees behind privet hedge).

Verdun with a bit of luck Ill get flowers from May right through to Autumn, I'm looking at planting a late flowering clematis through the lilac (when it gets a bit bigger) to  extend the season even further.

Look at Corydalis 'Saphire' Lizzie27. Thats happy in a shady location and doesn't like it too dry.

  • Lizzie what about the good old hardy gerainium, theres a reason most of us have themimage

Phacelia....something, its an annual but has lovely blue single flowers, similar to flax, my brain is telling me its called venus looking glass, but im not sure thats right!

There are a few blue clematis, one or two can be grown through other shrubs, they look quite good from what ive seen image

Gosh, lots of lovely blue suggested plants there - thanks everybody, I'll check them out in my RHS book. Verbena bonarensis does very well for me and I hadn't realized that verbena rigida is bluer so will try to find that.
