Ah GardeningG that sounds lovely.never seen a tree creeper. Had never seen a goldfinch until 3 weeks ago! Would love to have a garden large enough one day to leave a wild bit of teasel for the. In the meantime, will plant a verbena Bon as suggested by hosta fan.
It was very mild here until today Alan- bitingly cold wind tonight and set to plummet by tomorrow....that's what I find hard, being originally Mediterranean in my bones- this constant yoyo-ing between bleak winter and start of spring. Drives me nuts!
My very smart bird feeder was a special 75th birthday gift from my daughter. Bit of a 'white mouse', really, because she can also see it from her house! I must explain that in our family a 'white mouse' present is something that you yourself would like, and will have the use of by giving it as a gift! My husband as a youngster was desperate to have a white mouse, so gave one to his mother as a birthday present, and then offered to look after it for her! We have great fun with this tradition!
That is classic! I love why you've named it the white mouse tradition. And by the way, they can be the best sorts of presents! Am waiting for my husband to give me a white mouse trip to New York some time, maybe in 7 years when I turn 50
Never ever seen a goldfinch in our garden. A neighbour round the corner claims she is swamped by them and suggested I got some nyger seed. The seed has gone off and now disposed of. I suppose they are having such a romping time at my neighbour that they don't need to come over here. I will however get some sunflower seed hearts as previously mentioned, for one last attempt.
Get the sunflower hearts- I'm no expert, but somebody else's analogy further back about pistachio nuts in shells versus roasted cashews, made me laugh! Ie, they'll go for what fills them most and us easiest. Nyger is diddly and small, sunflower hearts are big and tasty. I bet they'll have all decamped to your garden in no time
Everything loves sunflower hearts, and maybe the sight of other birds flocking to your feeder will encourage the goldfinches to follow them. Here's hoping for you, Forester 2!
007 - Thank you - getting the sunflower seeds tomorrow .No, I pinched my avatar off the net! Perhaps I should search through my photos for a local picture!
I think I'm going to try the Sunflower hearts. I have the seed, but none of the birds are interested. Even the big fat wood pigeons don't want it. Suet pellets with mealworms seem to go down well, but not the mealworms on their own.
To my delight I had one goldfinch visitor on rspb count day. They only frequent my front garden which is warmer. I don't put food out at the front but I noticed that they eat the seeds on the rudbeckia. Something to plant in spring for the next winter harvest ?

By the way, love your avatar. Is it local to you?

You're welcome Forerster - good luck! And be patient - I had to wait months for my lot to appear!
