How big are vine weevil grubs?

Discovered that the roots of some potted polyanthus in my GH are being eaten away by grubs.  They are white, and c shaped, just like the dreaded vine weevil.  However, they are about the size of a small ball bearing when curled up - i always thought vine weevils were more woodlouse size ...... Does anyone know what I've got image

Baby ones!  I've just found some in one of my pots of begonias that were overwintering indoors on the kitchen windowsill!  If they have orange heads they're vine weevils.  image

The grubs themselves are just as you describe chicky and they do the most damage to the rootsimage.  I'm sure someone will tell you the best way to treat them.  I was lucky as I only found them when emptying spring bedding and changed the compost.  Good luck.

I use Provado Vine Weevil killer twice a year as a preventative measure on my bonsai trees. If you have a lot of pots in your greenhouse, the easiest way I have found is to mix up enough to half fill a big plastic box. deep enough to dunk your pots. I then put a couple of canes across the top of the box at one end as a draining area. Dunk each pot for long enough for all the soil to be soaked through then put it on the canes for the excess to drip back into the box while you dunk the next one. This saves an awful lot of mixture as you are re-cycling the excess rather than it going into your greenhouse floor.

Good luck! Hope they haven't done too much damage yet as it sounds as if you have caught them early.

I use nematodes to control vine weevils - I'm not convinced by Bayer's protestations that Provado does not damage to bees and other pollinating insects.

They are huge here too, but they start off as tiny babies so I find all sizes. Why do grown up vine weevils always get into My bedroom in autumn, other rooms aren't affected?

Have you got creepers on the walls - I think you have - and you probably have your bedroom windows open to air the room?

Thanks Dove, but the creeper is on the sitting room wall, not my bedroom and other rooms get aired too. But not today - Brrrrrrrrr too cold!
