Easy to work out, if the plant has leaves on stems and with flower buds coming from leaf joints then do not prune. If the flower buds are coming from the very base of the plant then prune off the leaves.
Will it not look a bit bare then? I'm assuming new leaves will grow? Gosh I'm sol rubbish!!
Althogh saying that, look what I just found in my 'nursery' area, not only have I managed to not kill the baby Hellebore given to me by Lesley K, but it also has a flower
The front leaf isn't yellow by the way, it's the sun.
I'm so pleased that it's still growing SL. The parent plant is white and there were 28 flowers last year. A few years to go for you yet - but you're young. I'm hoping to get other colours to pass on in the next few years with many thanks to fidget
I have only ever cut off damaged or black spotted leaves or ones that have obviously died back.

Oops!!!!
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
this is a great thread. I got my first hellebore last year and was surprised to see it had seeded and i have new plants already. Must go out and check on those. Also need to cut off those leaves with black spots... ah children back to school tomorrow.
Strangely that is the only one in flower. H. thibetanus which is normally the first to show has buds but the flowers are not open yet. There is a very dark one almost in flower, but no photo I have ever taken gets the colour anywhere near correct. The camera seems to wash out the colour somehow.
