I can't see any buds on any of mine......I think my Beages may have trampled on them too much I didn't realise you were meant to cut the leaves off eithe, I must have missed that somewhere??
I never knew the buds were called noses. I have only just cut the old leaves off mine, some had black spots on but the new growth is perfect, no flowers out yet, but soon. I have some seedlings in a tray ready for next year.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
It is only the orientalis hybrids which have the leaves removed. Most of the others should only have dead leaves cut off.
The advice with seedlings (from Ashwoods) is to prick them out as soon as the seed leaves are fully opened. They very quickly develop large root systems after that and root damage is something they really dislike.
After only a few days back on I'm learning new things already, after reading this thread I have had a look at my Hellebores this morning. I only bought them last year and thought the flowers grew on the leaves not as new growth!! Anyway, here they are....lots of buds that were hiding under the leaves so I had missed them!!!
The question is, should I cut some leaves back or not??
I forgot to say, lovely flower Berghill, I love the colour

Berghill,

Angela, many folk cut off the old leaves , basically because they look tatty, but sometimes infected. It shows off the flowers too.
