Thats usual, ewor. It has been mild so far and spring growth is advanced. It will come to no harm when it cools down.

  • I bought some allium bulbs last month half price at garden centre and have just planted them in large container with some tulips underneath. It's a bit late for planting the tulips I know as they were just starting to send up a shoot, but the alliums were not showing any growth. So I hope they will al be ok.

I left all my alliums in there pots last year and let them die down and out of 17 only one has come up.  I don't know what went wrong.  I dug some up to see if there was an issue the bulbs look fine.  I have covered them over and am waiting but not hopeful.  Any advice would be welcome

Have dug this thread up (pardon the pun), as l was wondering specifically about allium azureum.  I have a pack of 25 and was thinking of growing them in pots, but not really sure if they are suitable. Any advice welcome !  :)

They will grow fine in pots but bear in mind that they grow to over 2ft with quite heavy flower heads so are prone to being blown over.  They need planting at a depth of 3 times the height of the bulbs, so several in a large, deep pot would probably be best.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

@BobTheGardener , thanks Bob, think l may have to see if l can find some space in the ground for most of them. I have one tall pot that will do for some of them. I hadn't realised how tall they are ! Thanks again.
