Gardening challenges for 2015

  • Hi Pauline, peas can be a bit disappointing crop wise, often even when grown in the ground.  If you like climbing (French) beans, you may well get a more useable crop when grown in pots.  Even if not, the flowers are very pretty and come in various shades including red, white and purple.  The Victorians used to grow beans purely for the flowers and it is only in more recent times that we started to grow them mainly as a food crop. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Best of luck with the peas Pauline. image You could try some lettuce and carrots in a miniature raised bed (window box), dead easy to grow or try the odd cabbage in the flower borders. image

Pauline, see if there's a local gardening group in your neighbourhood, if not, maybe start  one???, Or contact a local allotment group and see if anyone is interested in a seed swap.

I've never understood why you get 80 odd tomato seeds in some packs, or 40 courgette seeds, and even less idea why anyone would want 2,000 nicotiana sylvestris seeds which I once had in a packet.

    Devon.
  • Pauline, I've had reasonable success with Peas in containers-just don't cram too many plants in one pot, and keep well watered. Mange-tout have been good in pots this year, and the dwarf beans. Carrots are a favourite too!

David K - those Chrysanths look amazing. Mine and OH plan is to try and lay a path this year. I also have a section of border that needs redoing. Pauline - pots are the best way to go as you can keep an eye on the watering. I have grown runner beans in pots quite successfully.

Gemma - what hard landscaping are you planning? I am also thinking of changing the veg I grow this year. I want to try something a bit different, but something I can readily use in the kitchen. Need a peruse through the seed catalogues to get some inspiration I think.
