Growing Garlic

  • I've never even heard of growing garlic indoors before. Interesting. I'll have to attempt growing my own garlic!

I grew garlic last year - it went in late December due to a house move and with winter so mild appeared within two weeks or so. Don't expect anything in a few days! This year my garlic went in a few weeks ago and there's no sign of growth yet (a size 13 boot print but that's another matter).

I found them very easy to grow, required very little effort on my part, survived repeated drownings from all the wet weather, and still taste very yummy!

  • There are different types of garlic, soft necked, hard necked and elephant garlic. They each require slightly different treatments. It is rare to have good results from shop bought eating garlic. I resorted to growing my garlic in large pots last year and had much better results.

The Isle of Wight Garlic Farm is very helpful, with a good selection of varieties suitable for growing in this country and clear instructions about growing each type of garlic they stock

.Father Christmas forget to give me my usual bag of their seed garlic, will have to write to him about that oversight!

Put in my garlic today, no cold frame or greenhouse yet, so went in modular trays on the windowsill. Fingers crossed but I'm beginning to learn there is more to growing garlic than I first thought, already have different plans for next year. image

Just noticed that my lidl bought garlic sown in pots is showing signs of life, it was worth the long wait.

Sorry but I would just stick garlic cloves into ground before it becomes too cold. they are not an exotic crop and are extremely hardy. Mine go in every year round about bonfire night, but have planted at this time when i forgot about itimage. They will come up. maybe string ina module is a good start now but still do not need molecoddling.

It does need cold to help clove development.

Some SM garlic is treated so it will not sprout

I put in about 24 cloves of soft-neck garlic at the end of November. They have all taken & have 5'' shoots on them image

In a previous year I planted some in spring but the results were not worth the effort - puny little bulbs. They obviously had not had either the required cold spell or length of time in the ground to develop properly. I'm hoping for better results this time.

My research (Google!) has indicated that seed garlic should be used rather than eating garlic because the garlic bought in SMs may be sprayed to inhibit sprouting, they may also carry viruses (seed bulbs should be virus free) and they may also be varieties which are not suitable for growing in the UK climate.

Garlic bulbs from the GC may be a little more expensive but should give more reliable results. That said - I'd stick an unused garlic clove in the ground before I put it in the bin - so good luck with any SM plantings - hope they give you  a good crop. image

Yes mine weren't showing until I put them out about a week ago into a good frost followed by a good soaking of rain and hey presto I now have shoots, the ones I bought from a supplier and planted into the allotment plot in November don't seem to be growing at all but I did plant them deeper than the ones in pots. Early signs seem to show that the ones bought from the supermarket for a fraction of the cost of the ones from the seed supplier are doing just as well if not better.

Hi Matty, I got onto it late and I dare not walk on our clay at this time of year as it will compact dreadfully, so no option to plant them out for me. Seemed the best way was to go the module route to at least have something this year. Next year I'll bung them in the ground in October so they can get some cold and develop gloves. image

I've got lots of shoots now showing. I used seed garlic from Suttons, Solent White, it was almost like the cloves sprouted as soon as they saw some soil. image
