Growing Garlic

GemmaJFGemmaJF Posts: 2,286

I had a go at putting in some garlic last year, just a few gloves from a shop bought bulb, though alive when I dug them up they hadn't had time to develop.

I read something and I can't even remember where that it is traditional to plant garlic in pots on the shortest day of the year to get them started?

I'm clueless but would love another go at garlic, so some very basic tips and hints appreciated and if the shortest day thing is true, seasonal too, will give me something to do on Sunday!

Well I've found they are best planted before Christmas from the RHS, so I best get my skates on and get on with it. image

When I said they didn't  have time to develop last year, I put them in with my onion seeds in the spring, onions were up out and dried, so dug the lot over, up came some of the garlic, barely developed and not fit to be dried and stored.

It's shallots that traditionally are planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest.

Ah OK Welshonion, image I've ordered some garlic bulbs from suttons so will bung them in pots when they arrive, will be months yet before I can get out on the veg plot, so wet at the moment.

Planted garlic last autumn, proper stuff, did everything as advised and the results were awful! Tiny little cloves not worth the effort. They got rust towards the end, as did my Japanese spring onions although my main crop onions were fine.

  • I plant garlic between Halloween and bonfire night, the ground is still warm enough to encourage root growth before everything shuts down for winter.

I find this helps reduce rotting off over a wet winter.

I'll try that next year treehugger, for now I'm going to put them in a modular seed tray in the propagator, bought a large Vitopod and can't wait to get some stuff in there. The garlic can share the space with some cauliflower and foxglove seeds. image

This is the isle of Wight Garlic Farm website has some great tips info and hints on Garlic types, when and were to plant etc

I bought some bulbs from here and they are growing well. first time i have try'd garlic like treehugger80 i planted mine early november not sure what results am supposed to have at the moment but there established well enough i think for the winter.

Also be careful with shop bought Garlic not seed Garlic some are sprayed with hormones to stop them from growing ( like potatoes etc) i always try to get seed type from gardern centres or online suppliers

    Best of luck.
