I have never had these problems with the locking mechanisms, either. On the three that I have at the moment the locking mechanisms are out of the way of any inadvertent movements of the hand or thumb and don't lock in use.
I have a mid-priced pair from Wilkinsons that I picked up for a £1, reduced from £8 because they were missing the packaging. I think they were Wilkinson Sword and are very good, the locking mechanism is plastic and quite stiff.
The others are a pair of Briers and a pair of Joseph Bentley 'Gold'. Both are very good and the Bentley are excellent but pricey, although they can be bought at a discount, around £12, in TK Maxx, in the summer.
I did once buy a very cheap pair from Poundland that fell apart after a few weeks.
Jardin de France secateurs with ratchet system I find brilliant! Actually all their tools are. You can buy them online, but they do great deals at the shows if you want more than one item. Their customer service is fab too, when my dad lost the spring whilst replacing his blade (totally his fault!) they replaced with a whole new pair for free! And he had them about 5years as well before needing to replace the blade.
Until recently, I would have agreed with Claire. My favourite tool was my new ratchet secateurs from Jardin de France. However, after just a few months of use, the spring has broken and Jardin De France cannot be contacted. And according to some reviews, they are no longer dispatching goods ordered and paid for via the internet ... so take care!
