Your favourite tomato varieties

Hi there,

We're running a feature in the February 2015 issue of Gardeners' World Magazine, about the best varieties of tomato.

We'd like forum members to nominate their tastiest tomato varieties and how they use them.

Do you swear by Sungold for salads but San Marzano for sauces? Or do you use Shirley for everything?

Please let us know your top tomatoes.

'Suncherry premium' (a red cherry) for salads...

'Golden Sunrise' (a yellow cherry) for cooking...

can't say I've grown that many, but I always grow these 2...

    Sungold for salads
    Shirley for sarnies and grilling
Black Cherry for both, usually with another variety for contrast
Tumbling Tom (or similar) just for fun grown in a basket on the shed

I have tried growing plumb toms for sauces, but frankly I think those in a tin from Italy are tastier

A mix of all the above roasted alongside lemon and herb-crusted baked cod with fresh runners is delish

  • 'Sungold' for orange cherry sized ones, 'Suncherry premium' for the red equivalent, 'Marmande' and 'Legend' for large ones and 'Cristal' for the reddest of red standard sized tomatoes.  All of those are very tasty. image

I don't have a greenhouse so only grow outdoors.

Last year 2 cherry types impressed .... Tomato 'Terenzo' F1 Hybrid (free seed with Gardens Illustrated)  ... lovely thin skin ... and Tomato Sweet Baby.

Will be growing both in 2015.

    Joke entry from me image

Outdoor medium sized cherry one called Dave no idea of it's real name but have continued it each year from saved seeds and it's delicious image  Dave was the chap who gave me the original plant 5yrs ago but he lost the label when he grew his image I have passed on seeds and others think they are really tasty.

  • I only grow outdoor tomatoes - this year Sungold cropped wonderfully, were trouble-free and the flavour was that wonderful acid/sweet combination that meant we were eating them from the vine like sweeties whenever we were in the garden!

Another favourite is the Heirloom oxheart variety Anna Russian - it sprawls and flops across the garden (I've found supporting it by tying it into a tripod of canes helps) and produces the most delicious large heartshaped juicy meaty fruits and is delicious eaten fresh or cooked - fabulous slow-roasted in the oven with garlic and olive oil.  Definitely growing it again next year.  http://www.tomatodirt.com/anna-russian-tomato.html
