Cerinthe

a friend has given me 8 small Cerinthe plants which he has propagated from his own plants. They are about 3" high. I have a (just) frost free greenhouse, or indoor windowsills. I don't want to kill them with kindness! Where should I overwinter them for best results, please. Also, I have read that they are annuals, but his are still flowering. Should I expect them to last more than 1season?

Hi Hilary, I've only had them growing in the garden and they were self sets they've flowered, seeded and grown nearby the following year. I'd be tempted to put them in the greenhouse and see what happens, but they might die so best wait and see what other forum members thinkimage

Hi Hilary. They are annuals, they flower and then die within the season but the season can be any time.

They're nearly hardy, in a mildish winter like last year they survive outside. I have rescued a few seedlings and put them in a cold GH

I sow them every spring and they are flowering by summer, so if they don't last the winter then just buy or beg some seeds.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I inherited a big clump of these and they flowered brilliantly until about July when I cut them back, collected some of the seeds and eventually pulled them out. Since then another whole area of them has grown from the seeds that must have already fallen in the beds and they are now about 12-18" high and still producing little flowers. I'm just going to leave them in over the winter, unless they go really mushy, then throw the saved seeds down in the spring.

Nut I'm glad you posted, today I've found a seedling in the garden and now it's happily in the GH image

I've spotted some more today KEFimage I might leave them where they are

I've put some in a pot with some Queen of Night, I thought the colours might go well. The cerinthes are growing so fast I think they'll be over by tulip timeimage

One of my seedlings came out with a white flower, I have saved the seed from it so it will be interesting to see if any of the offspring are white.
