Yes they do make an awful noise don't they!

  • That's great. I haven't seen or heard hedgehogs for a,few years now but I think there is one in the hedgie house and rhe hedgie food is going
  • Some hedgepig has certainly had a kip in the house, there is a circular gap in the straw!

  • I was having a tidy-up session ( long overdue!) in the greenhouse and moved some pots off a bag of multi-purpose compost. The bag was half full, so I grabbed it to move it out when I saw a hedgehog curled up and asleep on top of the compost. I left him where he was. Should I leave him there all winter? Or should I try to place him somewhere else? If so, where? Will he wake up if I lift him? The greenhouse is unheated but gets any sun that is around. We are in the south of England, so temperatures only fall below zero occasionally, and very rarely in the greenhouse. His bag is half underneath a shelf, so he is shaded from bright sunshine. I would appreciate any advice.

  • I'd give Tiggywinkles a call, they are very helpful.

  • Thank you, Steve. I looked them up and got their contact details. I was amazrd to find that they are only a few roads away from me, and less than 5 mins by car! Anyway, I thought I'd check on my hedgehog before calling, and guess what? He had gone! I only hope that he is still around my garden somewhere.

  • I'm sure he'll be fine Lilydotwin - we accidently disturbed a hibernating hedgehog the first winter we were here - he didn't wake so we popped him and his pile of leaves in a cardboard box on it's side in a sheltered corner of the garden very close to where we'd nearly trodden on him - he survived fine and we see him most summer evenings when he comes to eat the food we put out for him.

The weather's not really cold yet and hedgehogs often wake during mild spells, have a trundle around, eat a beetle or two and go back to bed.  image
