I cannot wait for the first frost

OK call me impatient but I need to get on! What will happen to my dahlias if I lift them now. I cannot wait until first frost. It's so wet out there I'm worried they will rot!

I have cut mine down and lifted, even though only the tops were frosted. They then have to be kept dry in the crowns or they will rot.

If they are large you can prop them upside down so any sap drains out of the stalks. This can be in a garage or shed.

  • OK, thanks for that.

  • I'v lifted my Dahlias today before they rot in the ground, with all this rain it might be a while before we get a frost.

when I saw " I cannot wait for frost" I thought you were looking forward to frost!!! Whew, just read the rest. If I never saw frost ever again, I'd be more than happy.

I too started lifting my dahlias even though we've had no frost.

A good strong frost would be appreciated here - need to srart killing all these slugs off!

  • I dug up mine today as I was in the mood to and only sliced through a couple of tubers and one bulb in the process.

Thats as far as I got with them tbh, I'll go through the process of flicking the slugs off and pulling the worms out tomozimage

..as with Susan Porter above... my neighbour never lifts hers and they've been in for years.... on a rockery type area, slightly raised ground... she has fuchsia's too in the same area all winter.... trial and error..
