I'd have to say Inverewe Gardens in Scotland. I remember it well because I was 10 years old and got lost. I'd read a book called Dominic in the weeks before our holiday and it involved the said Dominic going on an adventure. He came to a fork in the path and randomly chose one of the directions.

So of course, I was playing this game in the grounds of Inverewe until I realised my Mum and Dad had disappeared. A lot of the paths wind their way through quite dense woodland and its easy to get lost there. Anyway, I eventually decided to head back to the car park and stand next to our motor caravan in the hope my parents would think the same thing. Surely enough my Mum found me there but it seemed a long time and meanwhile the garden staff had been alerted to the disappearance of a 10 year old boy image

So that's why it has to be Inverewe. As for plants I just seem to remember rhododendrons everywhere.

  • I just love Hidcote - you move from one garden into another and it is just stunning in the variety of styles.  It is definitely a whole day out but the Cotswold country side round about is also beautiful.  It also has a well stock plant sales area of plants from the gardens.

Barnsdale of course has all the reminders of the programmes we allloved so much - Geoff Hamilton was a great gardener for creating things from what he had lying around, and growing from seeds and cuttings (none of the "dig it up and throw it away and buy two more from the GC stuff) - my kind of gardener.
