Canna Lily
in Talkback
Can anyone give me any advice on how to overwinter a 'Canna Lily'. It has been grown in a pot, which it is still in. I don't have a greenhouse, but I do have a conservatory and I live in the south.

I grow Cannas and I live in the south I put my Cannas still in there pots into the summerhouse, because they will be dormant they only need to be protected from the hardest frost.
I know down here some people leave them outside in the soil but I find this delays flowering next year.
Thanks Chrissy. This is the first Canna I've had. Should I allow it to be hit by frost before bringing it in? Also, should I cut back the foliage? As you know, we've had a couple of frosts, but my Canna doesn't seem to have suffered - it still has flowers on it and a flower bud. I bought it at the HC Flower show and it was only a baby, so, I'm assuming it flowered late. When are they supposed to flower? Sorry for all the questions!
Mine were still flowering when I cut them down this week. I would keep it in the pot, let it dry out, and put it somewhere dry and cool.

Some believe you should let it have one frost and then cut it back then store it, others think this is unnecessary. I let mine have one frost unless it's getting too late in the year in which case I cut it back and store.
when it starts back into growth if you can put it in a nice warm and airy place they tend to flower earlier.
I've just found this thread and was wondering what to do with mine, it was a present for our anniversary and has now died down.....I thought I had killed it!!
So am I right in thinking it's ok to leave it in its hedgie home and just put it in the GH as it is?
This was it when I got it, I hope it looks like this again next year
Sorry, mines a Calla......but do you look after them the same way?
I'd put in the GH, OL. But I may be wrong......soz
Mine are in a pot too heavy to move so I will have to dig them out. I was going to wrap them in fleece and put them in a box in the garage. On another thread, Verdun said keep them dry and Punkdoc said keep slightly damp??? Some years ago someone gave me one, I left it in the bed and it died, so this will be my first winter storing them.
