horticultural society
I belong to a small horticultural society in a village in West Sussex and we are fast running out of money. We do have an annual Show but only manage to break even on that, if we are lucky. This year we have decided to take a table at the village christmas fair and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas, suitable for fund raising. We have already planted bulbs in baskets and intend to make christmas wreaths with holly/ivy etc. Someone is going to donate some home-made christmas cards but we are stumped for ideas which will not compete/clash with other organisations in the hall. Suggestions will be gratefully received.

What about chutneys and jams made with your own produce?
Could you have plant sales at other times of the year?
A quiz; name that plant? Or, how many songs can they name with plants mentioned. Just 20/50p to enter?
Love the scanner idea Philippa
I suppose printer ink and paper come into play though
I like that artjak
If you are allowed to do rafffle/lottery you could offer an hour of weeding etc for spring.
Like the idea of plant prints
Several villages here have thriving Garden Clubs. What are your subscriptions and what do you spend the money on, hire of hall and speakers? Most seem to have a raffle at meetings and have at least a Spring plant sale which gest cleared in no time at all. Flower shows as well, open to the public as the plant sales, with teas/coffee/light refreshments. The village I live in has an annual flower show although there isn't a garden group. They hold that over a weekend with Sat mornings for setting up and judging and the other day and a half for public viewing again with teas etc. These are all small villages and the sales and shows are strictly amateur
Christmas Fairs are crowded with people selling cards etc but not plants so as much as you can muster in that line will do well.. The scanner idea is certainly different and concentrating again on the garden should go well. I might have a play with that in a little while
Will any of your members have spare Veg from their plots? How about mixed bags of seasonal home grown veg?
Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions but need to clarify one or two points and hope I'm not going to sound too negative. The organiser of the fair stipulates she does not want duplicated stalls as everyone does have to pay £20 for a table.
Chutneys along with cakes, pickles etc. will already be on sale in support of the upkeep of the hall. Didn't know what to call the holly/ivy other than wreaths but they are those round things which people hang on their front doors, gates etc at christmas!
Maybe next year we could be organised for selling seeds, cuttings etc. but we only knew about our finances, or lack of them, following a recent AGM. Pictures, using a scanner, sounds very interesting but there are only a handful of members and I would have to email around to see if anyone has access to a scanner. No raffles allowed, unfortunately, as fair organiser has cornered the market. Maybe we would be allowed to do a paper quiz on plants or similar - will circulate that idea.
Many thanks for all of you who contributed.
Guess the number of beans in a jar? £1 a go. Prize £10 or maybe something else.
