Empty Space??

I have a small (2.5x1.5 metre) oval bed in the middle of my lawn, there are lots of other well stocked flowerbeds but for some reason this one was empty when we bought the house. There is a small tree on the edge of it; I think a magnolia (yellow, very fancy). Over the summer I planted some annuals, gladioli and dahlias…

They could self seed, especially if you leave seedbeds on for the birds over winter. Hirta is "hairy" which helps deter slugs and snails?
