Lyn,Can you tell me how to prune this one in the pic,we inherited it a year ago it was sad and neglected ,I gave it a 2 inch clean up and it shot back into life with wonderful flowers ,its 10/12 feet high and 15 feet wide and a good screen,how far down do i cut it if i want it to come back to still keep it as a screen ,i dont mind cutting it right back as long as it comes back to the top of the fence if poss ,many thanks, Alan
I think they look better too, they look a bit straggley if you leave them, they make tremendous growth in one year. It will thicken it up. Cut it back when you see new growth just appear at the base.
It wont make that size, but it will look thicker and stronger.

Mine mostly die right back in winter Alan and then get cut back to base, though on the coast this may not happen.
They didn't die back last winter and I didn't cut them back.
