Meconopsis Lingholm (Himalayan Poppies) seed

Hi fellow gardeners,

I have just collected some seeds from my Himalayan Poppy (Blue) and are just wondering if they will come true? and how long will it take to flower growing from seed? There are a least a hundred seeds from just one flower bud! I am really chuffed, as this is the first year it has flowered and it was a beauty. Let me know if anyone would like some seeds. I have a lot to spareimage thanks.

  • Hi Dancer, I was saying that please could you resend your address? There are some big gaps in your first message. image Think PM is playing up.

  •  Hi - I have bought some seed which arrived todayimage I bought a few live plant plugs from one of the GW offers, the beginning of the year,  but the plants had gone black and died within to weeks, which just made me more determined to grow themimage

So one of my questions would be the same -  Im thinking I can sow the seeds and leave in the cold frame,  how long will it take to flower if the seeds take?

That should be when the seed take - power of positive thinkingimage

  • i have several plants of "lingholm"which i have grown from division, but attempting to grow from seed this year, they have now been stratifying in the freezer for a couple of months,so i will try to sow some now and retain some for springtime

I hope you have success, I've bought 6 plants over the last few years and have managed to keep two from last year alive, but they didn't flower. I understand they like slightly acidic conditions, moisture and cool weather. They grow well in Scotland & the Lake District, but either don't like Yorkshire or don't like me. image I've never seen one in flower and it's one I'd love to see.

Photos would be greatly appreciated. image

  • Hi Kef

I have just looked through my photos and afraid that I didn't take any picture of it! What was I doing?! I will take some photos of it next year if it survives the house move.

I got my plant in April last year in a 9cm pot. It didn't flower last year. This year it had two flowers. I'm in west yorkshire and the plant is in a shady spot.

  • Wow! Iain, that is beautiful! how big does the clump need to be before you can divide it?

Are these so different from other poppies?image

The majority of my poppies  appear to flower first year from a spring sowing,  I have never tried  t he.   blue poppy , but it looks worth the challenge! image

Ian thank you for the photo image

flowerlover I can't blame Yorkshire air for my lack of success, must be me image

Cangran, I think the big difference is the low temperature and shade that they require, saying that I've had no success image maybe I scared them by looking at them twice a day. Hope you are succesful if you give them a go.

Going back to original question about them coming true I know Punkdoc grows them succesfully from seed and Fidgetbones has also done so, but I think hers turned out pink this last year.

  • split mine at about two handspans wide, and they do go on for quite a few years ,but meconopsis betonicafolia does'nt seem to last more than two years
