  • I forgot to say Phillipa, ive posted a few wax wax beans to you today, i must have forgotten about them! There is only a few, i will send more when mine are ready, but at least you know some will grow!image
  • I'll have a look through my seed tin and see what I've got image

I've got mini pop in my garden and it's probably twice as tall as the normal corn I've got on the allotment.

Mini pop no good here, I have just been down the garden and all my cosmos are broken down in the wind, I am pleased I took photo's when I did. they were just coming into flower.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Looking forward to them Phillipa image

No wish to spoil the party but carrot seed tends not to do so well the following year and most parsnip seed definitely will not germinate. I haven't have problems with lettuce, turnip and sweet corn, or some other seed but I always bin them after the second year -- even if the packet says they are still in date!!

  • Goodness me Mel! With the exception of carrots and parsnips, ive sown seed uve had for years and years with good results. I still give out of date carrots etc a go, sometimes they work.

Why not get rid of your old seed on here or at your local allotment? Someone will be very glad to recieve them image
  • Lyn, are your cues snack ones? Im after snack ones for next year image

    Hi bekkie hughes.

I would rather not take the chance with very old seed. Heartbreaking to wait around with little - or nothing happening! I have already passed on some seeds via this site but all quite fresh so no guilt. On our allotment we do pass around seed so long as it is viable, though generally exchanging plants and seedlings which prevents both parties looking daft!image

PS Melon seed has a ten year life - apparently !!

  • Yeah id def agree about melons/ squash etc, i had some pumpkin seeds which id saved from one id grown, they had been in the collection for years and years, every last one came up this year (i didnt expect them to!), im now about to be buried under a pile of pumpkins!

I dont mind so much these days if something fails, it used to bother me more, like you i had an allotment, but im just a back yard grower these days image

I have to fess up, im rubbish at binning seed, even if i know there is no use for it, i could do with being a bit more like you! image

Bekkie hughesimage OK. I give in. I have seed for Green Zebra and Sunset red Horizon Toms, Atika root parsley, Bulgarian Giant Leek, Purple, Sugarsnax and Amsterdam carrots, Mammoth and Long Red Florence Onion and Dill that I have no further use for, and all in date. How do I pass them on via this site?
