Flowers to Grow in Allotment

Forester2Forester2 Posts: 1,477

A couple of us have decided to grow flowers in our allotments next year for cutting for the house.

I already grow gladioli, sweet william and sweet peas in the allotment.  What else can we grow that the slugs will not eat and will not need cosseting too much and suitable as cut flowers.  (This is as well as the vegetables which we grow).

Daffodil Bulbs are very cheap and great for cutting. Slugs dont bother those image

What a good idea Mattbeer - I never even thought of spring flowers.

Another good one Scroggin with cornflowers - they have gone on my list too.

Cosmos would need to be started off somewhere else first I suspect?

    Thanks both.

  • How about Helichrysum (aka strawflowers, paper daisies and everlasting flowers) which you can also use as dried flowers by cutting and hanging upside down just before they are fully open?  I grew some this year which were very easy and seemed resistant to slugs and other pests):

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Crocosmias work well as cutflowers, and they are completely trouble freeimage.

Good thing about Daffs is that there are so many species, you could have different varieties of them for quite a few months. image

Only problem is the leaves take a while to die back.

  • I try to have stuff i can use in a vase and that work as companion plants to the veg, amongst other things, ive grown callendula greenheart orange, im really pleased with it, looks like i will have some seed from it soon, i will post on the wish list thread if i do image

Thanks BobTheGardener - another very good idea.

I have crocosmia in the back garden Marco de Jong so will give that one a miss but thanks anyway.

Yes Bekkie - pot marigolds another good idea.

I will be putting them all in one section of the plot separate from the veg.

  • dahlias (you can eat the roots image) and sweet peas (great for bringing in the bees for other flowering veg)

Rather than having a separate section it might be better to intersperse them with veg, so that you can use good companions.
