who is the thief?

Does anybody know who has been eating my sweet corn, just when it was nicely rippening?

  • What a shame, freewillow!  My guess would be squirrels or mice, but I can't grow sweetcorn here so I don't have direct experience.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

With that amount of destruction I would say it looks like the work of squirrels, I have had this happen to mine last year .Id be interested to know if there is any deterrent .maybe start a new thread?

Squirrels have been a pest stealing my apples before now - i now hang net bags of the smelliest carbolic soap i can find in the branches and it seems to keep them away. No such luck with the meesesimage

I lost 50 cobs one year, but the squirrels detached them and either sat on the fence eating them, or dragged them off into the wood to a drey. If they are still on the plant, it might be a smaller rodent.

The best deterrent to squirrels is a Jack Russell.

Bit of an honour to have your crop eaten by deer Hostafan?

I assume we're talking about the north American tree rat here rather than our lovely native red squirrel.  You have my sympathy, but no ideas other than an air rifle.

Steve, you're welcome to the flippin' thing. We spent over £800 deer proofing our veg garden this spring.

    Devon.
  • I feat it is our lovely red squirrel. I see one from time to time in the garden. Would never use a air gun though image

Well - if it's a red you might regard it as an investment in nature and grow some under a net next year.  Lucky you to have them image  I'd have no compunction about shooting the horrible invasive greys though.  Apparently they're good to eat.  As, of course, are deer, but you'd have trouble knocking one of those off  with an air rifle!

I hadn't realised, being a townie originally, that deer were so much of a problem Hostafan!  They sound like a real pest. Still, at least they don't climb trees!
