Homegrown Wedding Flowers

  • I'll wait until they get their "true" leaves - this is the second set of leaves they grow, more like the leaves on the mature plant (although this is the first time I have grown them so I don't know what they look like!). Then I'll wait until they look sturdy enough to separate out and I'll put them in individual pots in aforementioned PVC greenhouse. The seeds were really tiny so there are lots of seedlings  -  I expect I will lose a few but if I manage to get 10 or more potted on I'll be happy.

Just so you know I've sown them in a small pot of compost (windowsill not being very big). I just covered the seed with a bit more compost and stood the pot in a dish of water so it was damp. Then I put a clear plastic bag over them. Seems to have worked. I'll take the bag off once I have quite a lot of seedlings.

  • Thanks! Good tip about the bag!

Thanks Fidgetbones....got quite a few garden centres near us but not sure if any belong to that group...may have to google!

I have a few seed packets here and have tubs and a couple of windowsill trays. I will also get a pvc greenhouse. Me and the hubby have decided not to dig out the flowerbeds until we have finished all the decorating in the house though - so everything will be in pots for now (plan to dig out the beds early spring).

    These are what I have......

    Larkspur

    Gypsophila Elegans

    Candytuft

    Delphinium

    Cornflower

    Love-in-the-mist

    Sweet Peas

I'm going to get more - but this is just a start. I'll sow the above soon and then again in a couple of weeks....depending on how everything looks in the spring, I may sow again.

I've also planted some alliums and iris.

How does that sound lovely people? image

Your friend Jodie is very lucky to have such a special friend image

Lots of love and luck to you both.it will be lovely if you can post pics of your progress and then the grand finale when you make all your decorations image Xx

  • Oh yes - definitely will post pics! Thank you! image

Just wondering - on the right side of this page, there is a Gardeners World advert for 20% off with some very pretty purple 'frothy' flowers but it says crocus on there - does anyone know what it actually is? It's gorgeous!

  • Oh! I see 'crocus' is a brand - d'oh!

Lol I thought the same at first image The plant is a verbena bonariensis

  • Sounds like a lovely selection of flowers. Not sure if delphiniums will do what you want - most are not annuals and won't be in flower by the summer. But if you can find some elsewhere, perhaps in a friend's garden, they  should be flowering around the right time. Many are too big but you.might find some new, small spikes.

Verbena Bonariensis would look good but I don't think you can grow it from seed in the time. But this and other perennials can be bought now in pots, and planted out as soon as you find space. Our local Morrisons had some perennials at £2, including Alchemilla Molllis.

Do keep back some seeds for next year, in case those you sow now don't survive the winter.

  • Thank you to everyone who has posted - you've all been really helpful!

that's a shame about the delphiniums - but even if they don't flower in time for the wedding - at least I'll have some pretty flowers in my garden at some point!

I've kind of overlooked buying plants to pot - silly me! It's a shame there's no Morrisons near me! image

Really sorry if anyone has already answered this question (information overload for a complete novice) - do I need to feed my perennials between now and spring?
