I've really noticed the nights drawing in. Usually down here in London it stays warm until mid October, not used to these cold spells at this time of year. We came out of the Garden Centre today and I remarked to my girlfriend how autumnal it looked, all the trees looked like they were ready to turn, very strange.

It's probably because we've got a three day holiday in Norfolk this week, when that's over it'll get really hot again when we've got to work image. Loved reading the poems!

My greenhouse is now shut much more often than its open with my chillies in there trying to keep warm. I keep trying to be hopeful for a second summer but we seem to be rapidly hurtling through the year.

On a non gardening front I'm now hunting a space to put a tumble dryer as it's intended location wont be ready this year and despite there only being two of us we produce so much washing that having it drying all around the house is disheartening (especially the bed sheets - I love my big bed but it means huge sheets!) I miss drying clothes outside come winter (although last year they were hung out all through winter it was so mild).

Flippin' 'eck James - warm till October...I should be so lucky! image

Trees have been turning here for a couple of weeks but that's not unusual. Rowans are looking stunning with their red berries all bright and cheery. My oak leaf hydrangeas are looking a russety reddish brown - very attractive. I love autumn - as long as we get the kind of weather we're having just now- cold nights and sunny days. It's the days of wild, windy lashing horizontal rain that aren't so good!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

2 jumpers and a raincoat for dog walking this morning. I find it very weird that the light in the evenings says 'August' and the temperature says 'October'image

I have heard it said that 'us Brits' are obsessed with the weather, its hardly surprising as the season is no indication of what to expect.  Personally, I find our weather fascinating as well as infuriating.  Probably the same for most places in this country but here in Cumbria we can experience 4 seasons in a day and rarely get 2 days the same.

Clarrington - with you on the washing/drying issue.  I also hate it drying around the house on airers - its depressing enough that its raining without dealing with wet washing as well.

One thing I really miss about summer, or even better weather, is drying my bedding on the line. I love that fresh smell when you get in bed, not quite the same as when dried in the tumbler or on the airer image

Hate the winter with an absolute passion.  Its so depressing.  I usually manage OK until Dec as we have C*******s (cant say the word its too early) to look forward to and plan for.  Its January and February I hate.  Thats when I would love to take a really long holiday somewhere warm and sunny coming back just in time to sort the garden out for spring.  I know it was warmer last winter but the rain was so dreary, I think Id rather have it cold and sunny.

Enough of this talk of Autumn and Winter, Im telling myself that its going to brighten and warm up.  Ive had some lovely holidays in Wales at October half term so fingers crossed that the weather turns round and we get to enjoy more sunny days.

OL Im with you on the ash cloud, it is looking better though so perhaps we'll be OK.

Thing I miss most about summer, leaving the french windows open and eating al fresco.
