Can u actually create a poisonous liquid fertilizer

I am a newby and have made a liquid fertilizer from a plastic bin with a tap below about 10inches off floor level to drain off liquid.

I 've put in raw kitchen scraps and water and added some purchased liquid fertilizer for gud measure?-yee of no faith!

After a month when lifting lid it smells attrocious, is this normal and has a white skin film on it. I have used the stuff for about 2 weeks now on EVERYTHING???

So have I gone about it wrongly or RIGHTLY?

Can u actually make a poisonous cocktail, is the liquid actually a POISON.

I have lost a few cucumbers I fed it to, is it that I shud have added water also?

The beans after my WARS with the SLUGS and ANTS are now over, they are growing in abundance. I got rid of the ants with spraying washing up water on them, will do same next year now I know it works...Slugs I went to a store for pellets!!

Any feedback wud be highly appreciate to at least test if this CLUB works?

Not sure of the ins and outs Stan, but any liquid feed made from vegetable matter - like comfrey or nettles -  needs diluting by about ten to one, so whatever you've produced is probably way too strong to use directly, especially if you've added another liquid feed as well!  I presume it's a tomato food or similar, which would also get heavily diluted before use.

It won't be poisonous unless you've put something poisonous in there.

Too concentrated would be my thought.

  • ...thanks to u both, u said what I felt, too strong mixture, so will try a number out of the air and select 10-1 to start with on one plant only..only joined 2day and amazed I got replies...if it works feel another business in the wind?..if it does work cannot see why people pay for the stuff?..plus u r more involved with ur gardening!-I will return as the man in black said and report dead crops or abundance.

If you want to check how 'strong' your ferts are you'll need a TDS meter. This measures Total Dissolved Solids.
Mature plants like a TDS roughly between 1.2-4.0 depending on the plant.

Miracle-Grow gives a TDS of 4.4 when diluted with my tap water. My tap water has a TDS of 0.9. Rainwater has a TDS of around 0.03, so using rainwater, I could add more ferts and likely get better results (but I save the rainwater for the tomatoes)

It won't tell you if it's poisonous tho.

  • all home made fertilizer makes a pong and will grow bacteria on it. keep outside in a container in a dark corner.Hold your nose when using the liquid because it does pong and feed your plants.its good for your plants and its cheap!image

  • I'm sorry but TDS has absolutely nothing to do with fert strength.

  • Signed up here to say that TDS has NOTHING to do with strength of fertilizer!!

  • Sounds like it's rotten and fermented.

You might want to put 1/2 tsp Epson salt and one capful of ammonia into it too next time.

I wouldn't risk putting it on my plants if I was you, you don't know what in the solution or it's pH. if you want a plant feed, there are loads of comfrey or nettle one easily found online which give the correct/safe dilution to use.
