Taking Chocolate Cosmos Cuttings

Hello,
I bought a Chocolate Cosmos plant yesterday which has now become one of my favourite plants! I was intending to take some cuttings from it but after looking at the RHS website it says to take them in the Spring by taking Basal Cuttings.

I was hoping to take some before Winter just incase it doesn't over - winter well and therefore I have a spare, but after reading that can it not be done?

If any of you have done it please can you let me know, thank you image

I can't help with an answer, but after seeing it in the GW magazine, I have a feeling it may be one of my favourites when I get one too image Just a thought though from a non expert, if you do take a cutting it won't affect the main plant will it, so I would do it as you have nothing to lose image

  • I would definitely recommend it, I'd had my eyes on it for months then finally gave in when I saw it in a GC earlier this week, it's now one of my favourite's lol
Yes I was thinking the same thing that I might aswell give it a go anyway image

  • When I have purchased these flowers off the net, they have definitely not been basal cuttings but have been this years growth and obtained at the end of the yeaR for growing on throughout the winter. That leads me to the conclusion that cuttings can be obtained in the normal way either in Spring or late Summer.  If you do not try you will never know and at 1 pound a cutting it,s worth a go.

  • am going to take some cuttings now. Will let you know how it goes.

    How did it go!?

I've just bought a choccy cosmos plant and would like to take cuttings. I'll try a few in water for fun anyway. Wondered if anyone's managed to take "normal" cuttings from it successfully.

They've never posted since @Mr. Vine Eye , so it's unlikely they'll reply unless you tag them -  ie  @carol 23

@Fairygirl Oh I know, it won't let me tag so she maybe doesn't exist!

Still bumping an old thread - have you seen how many views this thread has? 1.7K, that's because it's one of the top search results when you Google taking Chocolate Cosmos cuttings. I've found this discussion before in the past.

So it would be useful to have an answer on it for folks.

I'll post my results on here!

Unless I do a Carol and disappear forever after posting this 😂

I'm not sure how many people try it @Mr. Vine Eye - perhaps they manage to overwinter [in mild areas] or they just buy new plants. I think there are some newer, more reliable varieties now too.

Maybe carol will appear like a Phoenix from the ashes... ;)

When I had some I lifted them, treat like dahlias. The winter I forgot to lift them, I lost them.
