Edibale flowers

Nic10Nic10 Posts: 16

Hi there,

I need a little advice, thinking getting flowers to crystallize with sugar.

Can anyone tell me if I get flowers from my local garden centre and i remove all the flowers that is on it, will the new flowers be safe to use for human consumption?

I am trying to grow from seed, but I think i might have left it too late.

many thanks

Nic

As long as you are careful with what you choose ( i.e not toxic) they should be fine, you can buy sanitizer which is what they use to prepare salads etc, but dont ask me wher to get it!

Possibly is a little late from seed, you might still manage nasturtiums, violas and callendula, they are pretty quick image

I brought my step brother an edible flower seed mix from the OGC, they also sell fruit and veggie wash image

    Hi Bekkie

Thanks for that. It was viola that I was thinking ofimage

So just to confirm. If the flowers were sprayed the new flowers don't pick up chemicals that was sprayed on the rest of the plant? Sorry for the double questions. Is just I don't want to poisson my wedding guests image

That's what I was thinking about the insecticide remaining in the plant...

I read that somewhere while reading up about the harm to beneficial insects although whether it is scaremongering/ my misunderstanding or truth I really couldn't say.

Are there companies that supply edible flower plants for the purpose of eating? I imagine they would not have been sprayed with anything...

Oh I just looked this up and found you can buy them online- greensofdevon and maddocksorganics were the first two that came up on a google...

    Hi Victoria sponge

Yeah I found them to. And I have had some delivered to me but when they delivered it was 3 days in transit and the delivery person then put the box in sunny spot which means more than half of the flowers were not suitable for the task.I think I managed to use 20 out of 80 flowers.

But it was from a different company as per the two noted above.

I wonder if local cake shops might either do them or have a supply of flowers you could do yourself?

I'm not recommending the above companies by the way,I have no knowledge of them...

The garden centres should be able to let you know whats been used on the plants, idoubt much goes on them after they leave the growers, there may always be a possibility of a residue, i would have thought you would have to consume a huge amount to have any effect.

What flowers are you looking for? Where do you live in the country? Im sure between all of us we could get you sorted image

I have white horned viola thingys and yellow viola/ pansies, when do you need them for? image
