Rudbeckia - Cherry Brandy

Afternoon all,

Three years ago I got a packet of T&M Rudbeckia Cherry Brandy seeds, I've sown them and the first year they grew but didn't flower. Last year they grew even bigger and had a few flowers. This year they are growing even bigger and have even more flowers! I thought these were half hardy annuals. Half are in pots while the other half are in the ground and all doing smashing. Are they sold as half hard annuals but in their native climate they are perennials?

How interesting, I wonder if they are sold as half hardy annuals because its a biennial?

I thought the majority of Rudbeckia were perennials, but I could be wrong.  I have herbstsonne and that's definitely a perennial...it flipping well wants to be. image

    Lucky you!

I also got some T&M Cherry Brandy - not one germinated in 2013. Tried again this year and I managed to get the same result.

    I recall they're advertised as half-hardy annuals.
    Well done Bubba!

I just looked this up out of interest as I've passed on them before as they were HHA. According to perennials.com (can't do links) it is 'not reliably perennial' and better grown as annual or biennial...apparently T&M bred it so it doesn't have a native climate as such...

Mine, at least the few that germinated, have grown incredibly slowly. Much better results from the Tiger Eye yellow ones.

I did notice that the one's in the ground grew a lot better last year than the one's in the pots. This year the pots seem to have caught up with the ground one's. I just hope I get more years out of them image

Well a year(ish) on and the ground Cherry Brandy's are no more image

But the one's in pots are still going strong. image

Might try to divide them and see if I can increase my stock

I bought them from T&M last year as well: lots of foliage and much larger this year and about to flower for me. Defo perennials.

Well, I'm not growing them again. Poor germination, poor growth, dull dusky red flowers and they all died in the winter. But it was -8° a few times.

This year I'm trying Zinnia Profusion Cherry which are already starting to flower, bought as plug plants.

24 roots, pot planted last year to plant out and flower this Summer .... 2 made it about 3inches tall ...will not try again!

  • Mine germinated quite quick. Hope they flower
