GW Presenters

  • Joslow I never for one minute thought the presenter did control the content.  I don't care who controls the content as long as it gets better than it has been!

A good idea to take a look at other presenters gardens or just a better garden setting then Long Meadow.  Berryfields was much better.

Yes I probably will be much happier watching AT's new programme, at least it will be a change from this years offering from GW.

Dove you seem to be very protective and even possessive of MD.  This isn't a personal critisism of him just the programme content and it's setting.

Protective and possessive?  I've mentioned his name 3 times in two fairly long posts about the programme he presents in response to specific comments, one of which included a remark that he was patronising - if that's not personal criticism not sure what is?

I think you've made it clear that some people prefer the make-over type of programme that Alan Titchmarsh is presenting, whereas some of us prefer a programme which is more about plants and horticultural techniques.

Isn't it great that we've now got one of each then?image

  • I've just looked back (quite randomly) at a past GW with Alys Fowler.  In a slot no more than two minutes long she collected some digitalis seeds and told us about the plant attributes and it's slug resistance, took the seed into the green house and showed us how to sow it and talked about the conditions it preferrs.  She then talked about those who don't have seed to collect can get a wonderful choice of seeds by joining a plant society like the Hardy plant society or the RHS and by doing so e.g. the RHS members have a choice of 700 seeds and also get 20 packets free for being members.  The seed list comes out in November and the seeds arrive in January.  She told how to prick out the seedlings and how/where to over winter them and the advantage of sowing in autumn is that they will flower the next year (being biannual).  She also gave some human interst telling us about when she was a student she used to clean the seed whilst listening to audiobooks.  I CALL THAT VALUE FOR MONEY!  Rachel de Thame in a recent GW however, took a full 5 minutes of programme time to revisit the Didcot Barracks most of which was watching her walk up the road, go through the gates, Look at how it used to be and recap on what they did.  She then talked to the wives with their children about how difficult it had  been to plant a few seeds and then she finally took a look at their straggly Dahlias which surprise suprise were planted (under her supervision) beneath the canopy of a huge tree!  The only educational bit was squashing a few black fly and tying in the sweet peas.  THAT'S WHAT I CALL A WASTE OF GOOD GW TIME. I rest my case !

Dear Dove, if you had bothered to look back you would see that it wasn't me who called MD patronising !  But then your comments re "Make over types of programme" is !

So if you understand that the producers/directors and commisioning editors dictate the contents, the slow pace, even the choice of presenters it would be better to start a new thread titled GW production .

I know it wasn't you Flowerpotty; I wasn't replying only to you but to the several recent posts containing grumbles about the current series of GW, and I addressed some of the specific points made.

And the term 'makeover type of programme' is only patronising if you regard that type  of programme as somehow less than other programmes, and as you've said you're going to enjoy watching presumably you feel it is a good programme, so why feel patronised?  It's a generic term for a programme of a certain type, but it's  not a term that imparts value or lack of it.

I used to enjoy Groundforce but I feel that for me personally it has had its day.  However I am glad that AT's new series seems to meet a need amongst people who are not happy with GW as it currently is.  We surely can't be expected to watch and enjoy every TV programme.  That is why we have choice.

  • I don't think I suffer from confusion regarding your meaning Dove, and I never ever said that I particularly like AT in any particular genre, you simply assumed. When I responded to Maud who said bring back AT she and I both mean in his role with GW not ground force or any other such show.  I didn't know that he was bringing out another show until you told me so I have no idea what it's about.  As far as "some of us prefer a programme that is about plants and horticultural technique" Havn't you actually been reading what I've been writing?  Staggering

The AT show was on for 6 weeks recently on ITV-it was called "Love Your Garden"-"Ground Force"under another name -a similar show is on tonight on BBC1

Flowerpotty-have you seen Beechgrove?- that might be more to your liking.

Yes, I've read what you've written but I don't agree that what you say you want isn't provided by GW.  However it certainly isn't what's provided by AT and Love your Garden, which you said you'd probably prefer.

I'm probably the one that's confused, but I've been confused by the conflict between what you say you want and what you say you enjoy image
