Cats fouling our garden

Our neighbour has lots of cats that are using our garden as a toilet.  Any ideas of how we can deter them?  Nothing against cats but don't want their mess!  Have planted lavender put up wire mesh but still they troop over!!

Hi heather iv the same problem next doors cat lays in wait to kill the birds in our garden what about spraying water ? Or a hand full of dirt or stones that usually does the trick or give it some verbil abuse

  • Long range water gun. You can squirt without them seeing you. Works a treat!

    Hi

Often they like to use newly cultivated soil where you have sown your seeds. Cover these areas with leafless twigs of plants like berberis and this will keep them off those spots.

12 bore shot gun will do the trick image only jokeing

plastic bottles filed  with water and stood up in the flower beds is a trick i use

they do not like seeing the reflection of themselves as they think its another cat so they go off and find some other place to go.

In my experience cats really love lavender, I have four, worked with cat rescues etc. I have used lots of citrus peelings and coffee granules, as well as a product called getoff I believe, it's meant to be safe and none toxic, but I've not used it since a lost cat called my front garden home for a few days while we traced the owner.

    I use chilli flakes.

  • I have 2 cats (after taking in a stray cat which turned out to be pregnant). I provide toilet facilities in both house and garden, but have still seen the youngest using a flower bed in my next door neighbour's garden when it's been weeded.

I'm the only resident in my neighbourhood who grows fruit and veg so I don't feel too guilty. Plus I've always kept them in at night, and I think this is why they generally stay in the vicinity of my garden.

  • Heather,

We have a tom cat which my wife got from the RSPCA, I provided a lav for him but he used it for a while and then stopped, the problem is if another cat comes near they stop using it. All my neighbours love him, one of the previous posts suggested a high power water pistol I would add put a small amount of washing up liquid in it because when the cat cleans it off the taste is not very good and the cat will remember this, this is what I tell my neighbours and it will not harm the cat.
