Watercress? Yes!
I always thought you needed a freshwater stream running through your garden to create 'watercress beds'. OH, whose interest in my gardening is largely ''tummy based' had asked me about growing it years ago, and I had told him that it was not an option. However, on spotting some cheap seed this year, I thought I would give it a go. One soggy growbag of it has not been enough, and I now have seedlings in a second one. We harvest whenever we can get our hands on it - it tastes delicious and is easy as anything to grow. So I just wanted to say that if anyone has ever wondered..... go for it!!

What a wonderful idea Busy Bee2. Watercress is so good for you and full of iron. Is it any special variety you are growing?
I put the leftovers from a bag of supermarket watercress in the pond. It's self seeded ever since,

I've used it in ponds on several occasions, standing water and spring fed ones - great for clearing algae although I have been criticised for saying so on here...
Self seeded readily as you say nut.
BBee - I think as long as the water doesn't get sour in any way, it will be fine. I could just put some straight out in the garden here - with the amount of rain we've had it would be fine!
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I don't have a pond but I grow it in one of those water retaining troughs, so it gets wet through, water tipped out and re-watered and always has it's roots in some water. I grew it from some from SM that I rooted in water. I keep it in semi shade under the bench so when I plonk down I remember to attend to it

I am only growing the Country Value (89p) seeds, so nothing special, and they are champion! I am probably very behind the times that this should seem so amazing. I always try anything new with the conviction that I will fail!
BB2 well you haven't failed
and not at all behind the times.
This is only the 2nd yr I've done it and that was because my OH can eat watercress like cows eat grass and at a quid a packet it gets silly.
I have grown landcress which tastes a bit like w cress but in my view a poor substitute.
I'll also have a go at growing new to me edibles, once grew gherkins, great crop, but how many pickled gherkins can two people eat ?
I won't mention the tasteless cardboard pods that stick in your throat also known as asparagus peas

Just bought some Sainsburys watercress to eat for lunch and remembered this thread. Do I root a piece in a jug of water on the windowsill then put outside when rooted? What sort of containers and size should I put it in outside?. I dare not put it in our pond as it is not big enough.
Good idea not putting it in a small pond Forester. My pond is quite large and full of watercress some years.

Thanks Edd - just printed off the instructions and will sit outside in the sun with a cup of tea and read them.
Nut - only just room for three man frogs and one teenager frog so they wouldn't thank me for the extra greenery.
