Thanks David, but no GJ and that's to of my wish list image

I am thinking of rearranging my borders and making a 'rose bed', however I have read that you shouldn't plant roses all together as if they have black spot it spreads to all of them.....any advice and also any advice on when to move would be gratefully received image

  • Never heard that one, OL and to be honest can't imagine what it's based on.

It is advisable to note the potential spread of each rose before you order, so you can avoid overcrowding. Overcrowding prevents free circulation of air between plants and thus causes diseases. Also to this end, when pruning keep the centre of the bush open, ie prune to a kind of wine glass shape.

Also, individual beds of one variety look much better than mixed beds.

I should be able to manage that David, I'm very familiar with the wine glass shape image

Yes, we know about your addiction, OL image  .......perhaps the words 'goblet shape' would have been a better choice of phrase.

Hi all, not been around much, actually got in garden yesterday, my gertrude jekyll has got to 7 foot tall, it's had a few flowers, not loads, i'd like it not to get quite so tall, should i prune it now? i pruned hard last spring v early lots of new growth in last 6 weeks. got to just tell you my eden rose still in pot is looking amazing, lots of lovely flowers and I've even had a few cut in a vase for over a week, even tough it's a climber, advice re gertrude v welcome thanks in advance

..when I had Gertrude Jekyll I used to prune off the climbing shoots to keep it as a shrub.  It wants to climb.  I think this rose is best placed along a picket fence or trellis, so these long shoots can be trained horizontally.  Otherwise just cut them off.

hmm it's vaguely poss to make into a climber, it is against a fence though north facing, also next to zepherine drouhin, too similar, maybe i'll be moving even more roses about this autumn winter!

  • Taken delivery of this pair of Draper secateurs today and have to say I'm delighted with them. I have to say it was the wooden handles & slightly retro look that appealed...Having said that, I've always trusted Draper tools and found them to be of good quality without being outrageously priced.
