my aquilegias don't get eaten , a lot else does, i too have resorted to very few bird friendly pellets around 2 or 3 vulnerable plants, sorry if someone's already said this andi've missed it, i seem to have lots of snails, do the same things-gravel, eggshjells, beer traps- work on them? also, i have loafds of bees and quite a lot of birds, tits, finches, blackbirds, robins, sparrows, got 2 bird feeders,i do leave areas of garden tairly untouched how can we get more wildlife? and how can i ensurer that wildlife isn't rats? i am terrified of getting them, had one in old house's yard
I have just remembered that I have a goodly length of leccy wire from when I was doing dangerous ops to the house. More 'oops' than 'ops', and so I shall be stripping the coating off and making short lengths to see if hand made copper rings will actually make a difference.
Mind you, if I left the wire connected up to the national grid, perhaps 24000 volts running through them might mend their ways somewhat !
Beware of the tunnellers ! What I think I would do is............ within the ring, tickle in some , ( just a few ) pellets INTO the soil where the little buggers come to the surface. It sort of 'ambushes them where they least expect it !
I'm thinking of getting some nematodes as well. My carefully nurtured cosmos have been massacred by slugs and snails. One thing, I've heard the nematodes only work on slugs as they live underground though I think my main problem is snails.
Just spotted this 'special' beer - it's even called Brain's SA = 'Slug Attack' - I'll give it a try over the next few days and report results back to the forum!
A word of caution about using salt.I've been trailing a ring of salt around my young foxgloves, which has done wonders in keeping the molluscs off but I've noticed a yellowing of the leaves on these foxgloves.Sure enough google tells me that salt overdose in plants results in these symptoms. So I've given them a good watering in an attempt to wash out the salt near their roots. And I thought I was sprinkling the salt at a wide enough diameter to avoid this.In retrospect I may just as well have left them to chance. OK slugs I give up....over to you

We had a degree of success with some copper pipe around hostas in garden, but after a time the devils tunnelled under it.
