It was nice yesterday, and was able to take these snaps. This is a red Helianthus that is still in flower...

Rain forecast today. Might do some tidying in the greenhouse. Or have an easy day.

Morning all, Not a nice day here very dark but no rain yet but we are in for a drenching later.

Gary. your garden is lovely. always something going on. I've gained a wealth of knowledge since joining this site and will put it to good use next year so I can have some more Autumn colour. I will have another go at Dahlias as well.

Had an interesting chat with a ''gardener '' yesterday. The people who live opposite at the front of the house hired one to sort out their front garden He has completely wrecked it with the help of a hedgecutter and strimmer. The people who lived there before had planted lavender all along the side of their driveway. that has been chopped to little brown stumps . The conifers have been decimated to odd shapes and the shrubs cut nearly to the ground. And he's NOT a gardener !

The reason I know this without stating the obvious ? He ran out of fuel and spotted me tidying our front and asked if I could run him to the garage which I did. He then went on to say its a sideline and he doesn't know much about gardening. He charged £180 for that pleasure and then offered to do mine for free in exchange for the lift. !!!!

I declined his kind offer. Such a shame. the other people had that garden looking lovely,

It has started paining-that is set in for the dayimage

Jean-I have seen that before-my mother paid someone and they did the same-oddly enough most things quickly grew back-money for old rope

Kate-my act of bravery was to get a spiderimage-eek- out of the toilet on my own-and dispose of it outside-glass held at a sensible distanceimage

The Helenium is called Ruby Tuesday. I have some others, but they are well over. I don't know what's keeping that one going. As with most heleniums the flowers are all quite small, only about 1 inch diamter, not as big as rudbeckias.

Re cowboy gardeners. I'm not surprised. I suppose that 'landscape gardening' is one of those areas that lends itself to people with no experience setting themselves up in 'business'. Some of us can remember TV shows which have featured 'nurseries' which have been run along very unprofessional lines.

I can't understand the mentality of people who want to hire someone to 'sort out' their garden. They can't be very interested.
